The spookiest time of the year is quickly approaching and with it comes a host of creepy costumes and fiendish fun. But don’t be tricked – along with all the silly scares, there are some very real dangers to your pets. Let’s look at some tips to help your furry friends stay safe and have a howling good time this season!

Easily Spooked
Why shouldn’t dogs attend Halloween parties? Because they can’t hold their licker. Seriously, though, parties and events are great fun for us, but the sights, sounds, and smells of the evening can really freak out our fur babies. Noises like knocking and doorbells can be easily minimized by sitting outside to meet trick-or-treaters. This also allows you to keep the front door closed – reducing the risk that your dog or cat will get loose or possibly act out against your visitors. Having friends over? Masks and costumes on people that may normally be familiar can cause pets to feel there are stranger things afoot. Consider keeping your pets in their crate or a quiet room away from the party. Soft music in the background combined with treats with calming aids can help keep your pet stress-free. Or what would be more appropriate as a spooky, Halloween treat for your dog than a long-lasting bone to keep them occupied during the festivities? We have what you need to help keep your pets relaxed while the party stays rocking.

No Tricks - Just Treats
There are plenty of things we can share with our pets, but Halloween candy should not be one of them. Besides being empty calories, there are real dangers to your pets lurking in the candy bowl. Chocolate – especially dark or baking chocolate – can be dangerous for cats and dogs. Sugar-free candies often contain the popular sweetener xylitol which can cause serious problems in pets. And there’s always that one house that gives out raisins – which, like grapes, are highly toxic to dogs. Instead of sneaking them candy from your stash, have some appropriate pet treats on hand. Not only is this a way to get your own pets in on the fun, but you’ll have some handy in case one of your visitors brings a costumed pet along trick-or-treating with them!
Also keep an eye on those jack-o-lanterns – dogs can benefit from eating pumpkin, but not that way. Rather, keep some pumpkin flavored treats on hand. Your pups will thank you! And for the felines in your house, try hiding treats or toys in a paper bag (without handles). They’ll love digging around inside and joining in on the trick-or-treating fun! Take a look at just some of the treats we offer that your pets will love!

Costume With Care
We all love to watch videos on Instagram and TikTok of pets romping around in their Halloween costumes. Before you don your dog with a cute costume this October 31st, make sure you consider the comfort level and personality of your pet. Some pets are content to play dress-up – others, not so much. Keep an eye out for signals of distress like folded down ears, side-eye, or tucked tails. For pets that prefer their birthday suits to a Batman suit, consider something minimal like a festive bandana. But if your dog is a cosplayer at heart, we have some fun options that will be sure to get some Instagram love.
Planning on decorating the house, too? Try to keep it as pet-friendly as possible. Watch out for lit candles, fake cobwebs, and strung lights, among other decorations. These types of décor can tangle, choke, or burn the curious animals in your home. Instead, consider decorations that your pets can enjoy, too, like a haunted house for your cats made from cardboard boxes! How cute would a photo of your costumed pet in front of their own haunted house look?
